This study evaluated a validated artificial intelligence (AI) tool for virtual implant planning by comparing its performance with expert-planned and clinically placed implants in single-tooth rehabilitation cases.

Despite the advances in automated medical image segmentation, AI models still underperform in various clinical settings, posing challenges for integration into real-world workflows. In this pre-registered prospective multicenter evaluation, the researchers analyzed 20 state-of-the-art mandibular segmentation models across 19,218 segmentations of 1,000 clinically resampled CT/CBCT scans.

Accurate mandibular canal (MC) identification on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is vital to prevent inferior alveolar nerve injury during oral and maxillofacial procedures.
